Sperm meets egg

I’ve been wanting to take on a long-term personal photo project for a while now. Many photographers dream of traveling to far away places for their dream photo assignments but I thought, “there’s a story right her in my backyard.”

I have the luxury of living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with its beaches, rivers, forests, desserts, and mountains. What’s more iconic than the salmon that is centric to so many aspects of life here. The venerable salmon is integral to our economy, culture, recreation, and history. Here, I spent a day at the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery on the Columbia River in Washington to see how they produce 15 million fall chinook each year for the sports fishery on the Washington coast.

After the sperm is squirted on the salmon  eggs, the combination is mixed and prepared for incubation.
